WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT ANXIETY AND DEPRESSION

  • 264 million people worldwide live with depression.
  • Approximately 17% of people will suffer from depression in their lifetimes.
  • An estimated 21 million adults in the United States (8.4% of the population) had at least one major depressive episode in 2020.
  • Anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in the US, affecting approximately 19% of the adult population every year.
  • Depression occurs more often in women than men.

WHAT ARE ANXIETY AND DEPRESSION?

While anxiety is a normal, everyday part of life, persistent, overwhelming, and uncontrollable dread can be disabling. Anxiety disorders involve extreme fear or worry, often experienced at the same time as depression. Common anxiety disorders include generalized anxiety disorder (GAD),  panic disorders, agoraphobia, social anxiety disorder, selective mutism, separation anxiety, and specific phobias.

Likewise, bouts of sadness are a normal part of life. Depression, however, profoundly affects the way a person thinks, feels, behaves, and functions. It is characterized by a combination of persistent feelings of sadness, loss of interest in usual activities, changes in appetite, insomnia or hypersomnia, feelings of worthlessness, and constant fatigue. Depression and anxiety disorders are different, but people with depression often experience similar symptoms to those with anxiety disorders.

HOW CAN ANXIETY AND DEPRESSION BE MANAGED?

Depression and anxiety disorders are very treatable, and the vast majority of people with these conditions can be helped with professional care. A combination of medication and behavioral therapy has been associated with significantly higher rates of improvement in even severe, chronic, and complex presentations of depression and anxiety.
