Osteoporosis

What you need to know about Osteoporosis

  • Worldwide, 1 in 3 women and 1 in 5 men over age 50 will suffer an osteoporotic fracture.
  • Approximately 10 million Americans have osteoporosis and another 44 million have low bone density.
  • A woman’s risk of osteoporotic fracture is equal to her combined risk of breast, uterine, and ovarian cancer
  • Approximately 80% of those affected by osteoporosis are women.
  • Young women with low bone density are most at risk for developing osteoporosis later in life.

WHAT IS OSTEOPOROSIS?

Osteoporosis is a bone disease that causes a person’s bones to become weaker and more likely to break under even light stress. Because you cannot feel your bones changing, many are never diagnosed with this “silent condition”. People with osteoporosis may break a bone from minor falls, or in serious cases, even from simple actions like sneezing or bumping into furniture.

HOW TO MANAGE OSTEOPOROSIS

A bone density test is the best way to diagnose osteoporosis and provides a baseline for building a treatment plan. Afterward, your healthcare provider may prescribe osteoporosis medication or physical therapy. Diet, exercise, and healthy lifestyle changes all play key roles in preventing and managing this disease.

How can I prepare for my appointment?

Plan ahead and be sure to give your doctor all the information that you can. It’s important that you take the time to paint a full picture, telling the whole story. Keep a daily record of your mood and response to any medication, reporting any trends to your doctor. Click here for more patient information.
